SEMINAR: Patrick Kotzur – Going beyond short-term effects: Testing intergroup contact theory with longitudinal field studies
Title: Going beyond short-term effects: Testing intergroup contact theory with longitudinal field studies
Abstract: Contact between members of different groups has been suggested to improve attitudes towards each other’s group. Despite a long-standing research tradition, there are still many conceptual and methodological issues in this research area that remain underexplored. In this talk, I will present a series of longitudinal field studies addressing some of these issues across different settings, including: (1) Is outgroup presence enough to improve attitudes? (2) If (not) so, under which conditions? (3) Are contact effects fleeting, or do they persist for longer periods of time? (4) Do levels of engagement in intergroup contact actually change outside of our labs? (5) What needs to happen so that people engage in contact?
Bio: Patrick Kotzur is an assistant professor at Durham University. His current work focusses on social perception (i.e., how we perceive others, why we perceive them as such, and what consequences these perceptions have) and how we can change these perceptions.
