Abstract: Existing models and approaches for studying acculturation (i.e., cultural change and learning) do not fully capture the dynamism and interconnection that are inherent to the process. Converging methodological tools that approximate the complex reality of acculturation without restricting from its dynamic and interconnected nature can therefore contribute to a more complete understanding of the acculturation process and mechanisms of change. During this seminar, I will talk about how we can benefit from a theoretical and methodological expansion towards a complex dynamic systems (CDS) approach. Understanding how the fundamental assumptions of CDS translate to the characteristics of the acculturation process is one of the primary goals of this seminar, as is understanding how these assumptions support the adoption of designs and methods that can alter our expectations about the processes being studied in acculturation research. To that purpose, I will 1) give an overview of the features that are frequently discussed in complex dynamic systems research, 2) present a model of acculturation as a complex dynamic system and how it can be approached using complexity-informed methods, 3) discuss the empirical implications of using a complexity lens.

Bio: Dr. Ceren Su Abacioglu is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Amsterdam. Her work focuses on studying how individuals from various sociocultural groups interact, adapt, and change over time. She employs the tools and methodologies provided by complexity science to explore these phenomena. Through this lens, Ceren seeks to understand the ways in which personal attributes interact and intersect, contributing to an individual’s unique experience of the world. This includes examining how specific interaction patterns with others are formed and how these interactions are both influenced by, and exert influence upon, their broader contexts such as institutional or global settings. Ceren aims to map out the nuanced ways in which changes in different acculturation domains such as social, cultural, and structural aspects influence each other across various acculturation agents. She is particularly interested in understanding the outcomes of interactions between different agents under varying contextual conditions.
