Abstract: The outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022 led to a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented scale, with millions of Ukrainian citizens displaced from their homes. By May 2022, around 5 million Ukrainian refugees had been registered across Europe, with a further 8 million internally displaced. Against this backdrop, we present selected findings from the Online Survey of Ukrainians (OneUA). OneUA data was collected from adult Ukrainians using Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger. OneUA targeted three groups of Ukrainians: (1) those who stayed in their homes in Ukraine, (2) those who moved within Ukraine (IDPs), and (3) those who left Ukraine as refugees. After presenting the methodology of the OneUA survey, we illustrate the potential of the data for studying refugee migration and destination choices. One innovative aspect concerns the patterns of migrants’ selectivity with respect to political preferences regarding the fate of their country of origin. Another application concerns the differential response to conflict-induced violence among demographically vulnerable (women with young children or elderly) and productive (highly educated and financially resourceful) populations at risk. The findings are discussed in the light of existing theories of migration and their adaptation to the case of forced migration.

Bio: Irena Kogan holds a chair in comparative sociology at the University of Mannheim. She received her training in Pedagogics (Ukraine), Sociology and Anthropology (Israel), and Social Sciences (Germany).  Her research interests are in the area of social inequality, migration research and labour market sociology. In particular, her research focuses on structural and cultural aspects of immigrant integration, transition from school-to-work, as well as the role of human capital and social and cultural resources in these processes. Interest in the role of countries’ institutional characteristics in explaining societal processes drives her research, which is largely internationally comparative.

Kogan has been involved in a number of large-scale projects. Currently she is co-directing the German part of the “Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries” funded by German Research Foundation. She is a PI in two projects: “Partnership formation in the context of refugee migration” (PARFORM) funded through the ERC Consolidator Grant and “Upwardly mobile through STEM? STEM competences, participation and returns among ethnic minority women and men in Germany” (STEMobile), funded by the Thyssen Foundation. She is also involved in the Horizon2020 project PIONEERED.

Irena Kogan is the author of a number of articles in leading international journals including European Sociological Review, Social Forces, Social Science Research, International Migration Review, Research in Social Stratification and Mobility, Acta Sociologica, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, and others. She is an elected Fellow of the European Academy of Sociology, an Associate Fellow of the D-Lab “Advancing the study of discrimination and inequality” (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain) and an External Fellow, Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration, University College London.
