Social Psychology and Immigration:
Finding Process in the Headlines

Kay Deaux
Distinguished Professor Emerita, Graduate Center of the City University of New York
Visiting Research Scholar, New York University

The prominence of immigration as a demographic reality and a policy imperative gives social scientists a broad arena for investigation. As media headlines and public discourse highlight certain concerns, we need to formulate research questions that are relevant to the debate and that can be addressed with our empirical and theoretical tools. In my comments I will characterize the particular space that I see social psychologists occupying and I will review some of the relevant research that speaks to the headlines. Members of the audience are encouraged to offer their own examples of these translation processes.
