ERC Advanced Grant to conduct research into tolerance

Maykel Verkuyten has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant. He will be using this prestigious European grant worth €2.3 million to conduct research into tolerance. The five-year ERC Advanced Grant is awarded to exceptional and exemplary senior researchers.

In a society growing ever more diverse in nature, tolerance is one of the key features of harmonious coexistence. Yet what exactly is tolerance? With the grant he has been awarded, applied for under the title Intergroup Toleration: It’s Nature, Processes, and Consequences for Culturally Diverse Societies, Verkuyten intends to study such matters as the underlying psychological aspects of tolerance. He also is interested in finding out when people reach the limits of their tolerance. In addition, the Utrecht University professor would like to study the sociopsychological consequences of what it means to be tolerated in society.
