Seminar: Dr. Vivian Liu – GENERATION PEACE – A cross-cultural, mixed-methods project on youth peacebuilding

Abstract: GENERATION PEACE is an interdisciplinary, multilevel project with three main goals: 1) to identify which factors and conditions predict youth peacebuilding (e.g., collective action, activism), 2) to assess the long-term, generational impact of youth peacebuilding across the globe, and 3) to integrate interdisciplinary frameworks from developmental psychology and peacebuilding to further advance the Developmental Peacebuilding Model (DPM; Taylor, 2020). Study 1 involved focus groups (N = 199) with adolescents in Colombia, Israel, Northern Ireland, and Switzerland. Using the Constant Comparative Method to highlight emergent themes and connections across categories, we created a Youth Peacebuilding Scale that both complements past scales on youth prosocial behaviour (e.g., interpersonal helping) and integrates broader aspects of peacebuilding (e.g., macro peacebuilding beliefs, collective action) to be applied across different contexts. We also examine both individual-level and context-level predictors to identify the factors and conditions that motivate and shape youth peacebuilding. Study 2 utilizes a quantitative, longitudinal design to distribute this scale in the four sites (planned N = 4800) at two time points. Preliminary findings from the first wave of data collection will be shared.

Bio: Dr. Liu is a postdoctoral Researcher at University College Dublin. Dr. Liu holds a PhD in Developmental Psychology from New York University. Her research explores how children develop intergroup attitudes in a context of inequality and finding ways to address related stereotyping and biases.
